St. Margaret Catholic School Science Club, Lake Charles, LA:A Cleaner Today for a Greener Tomorrow
St. Margaret Catholic School Science Club in Community Environmental Outreach for bringing awareness to the Lake Charles area on pollution prevention matters in the community. The target awareness areas dealt with storm drain identification and what should not go into the drain. Students brought this information to the community by handing out flyers that identify where the storm drains lead and by putting ID decals on the actual drains. The students continue to follow up with a recycling program, by holding reverse pickets at all of our area recycle centers. The club also educates the community by handing out recycling information that includes times and locations of recycling sites and surveying the community to see where they can improve on pollution prevention.
Voluntary pollution reductions recognized by Environmental Leadership Awards
BATON ROUGE – Today, the Department of Environmental Quality recognized the achievements of industry, local governments, non-governmental organizations, schools and universities, and an individual during the 2010 Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Awards ceremony, held today in the DEQ Conference Center. New and existing members of ELP were commended for their voluntary pollution prevention efforts, community environmental education and outreach initiatives and environmental ordinance. The ceremony highlighted projects that went above and beyond regulatory compliance to substantially improve the quality of the environment. In 2009-2010, the ELP enrolled 18 new members.
Collectively, the efforts of ELP members in 2009-2010 removed 3,499,548 pounds of pollutants from the environment, including NOx emissions, acrylamide, nitrates, solid waste, used oil, etc. Additionally, 172,034 kWh in energy usage were reduced through the UNPLUG Campaign. Also, 1,199,144 pounds of materials were recycled, including electronic waste and household hazardous materials. Through an environmental ordinance, a Litter Court was established to increase accountability, establish uniform penalties and streamline enforcement. Senator Jody Amedee, Chairman of the Louisiana Senate Environmental Committee and Representative Gordon Dove, Chairman of the House Natural Resource and Environment Committee joined DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch to present the 2010 ELP Awards. Secretary Hatch commended the voluntary efforts made by the honorees in protecting and preserving Louisiana’s environment.
“The Environmental Leadership Program is a great way to recognize those who have worked tirelessly to spearhead community outreach efforts, combat pollution or present educational programs that make a positive difference in the quality of Louisiana’s environment,” said DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch. “With the addition of 18 new members, we hope to spread the word and enlist others to join us in continuing along the path of preserving and protecting our state’s natural resources for future generations.”
The ELP began in 1995 as a cooperative effort between DEQ and participating companies in the state. Today, any company, federal entity, municipality, school or university or individual committed to improving the quality of the state’s environment is eligible to join the program.

How many pound of recycled material do you keep out of the land fill in Calcasiue Parish??? Shocking news not much...2% is all we are doing in the Lake Area to reduce the impact of land fill recycling.. As of October 2009.
The Science Club goal for the last 3 months has been awarness of what can be recycled!!! We will be back in three months on this issue to see if our efforts have made a difference do your part and recycle

What a day.....We participated in Adopt-A-Road ; a community project which assigns different groups areas to clean ...We decided we would plant a flower bed that day in our School parking lot, and many of us went to K-Mart or Kroger's to hand out recycling information and to take a survey of peoples knowledge of recycling in Lake Charles.

Hi my name is Talmadge: I have participated in the grass planting at Martin Beach. I participate every Wednesday in bringing recycle boxes to the recycling bins. I worked on Oct.3 doing the solar tour.

Hello my name is Miranda: This summer I participated in the planting grass at Martin Beach. I also every Wednesday pick up the recycling boxes from classes and bring it to the recycling truck. Saturday October 3 I worked the Solar Tour at our school and help pick up cans at Calca Chew the next day. I will also participate in the Adopt a Road on October 24.I contacted Mrs. Babara Monroe to come talk to our Science Club on Tuesday October 13. I also contacted Mrs. Mary Gentry with DEQ to talk to the whole junior high about our water.

Hi my name is Khristian:September 19 i participated in Beach Sweep. On every Wednesday I go and bring all the recycling boxes to the recycling truck. World Water Monitoring is an international project in which you can monitor your local drinking water and see how it compares to other countries. We tested Lake Charles Lake and the Calcasieu River for PH, Torridity, and dissolved oxygen.
The students have joined a local task force committee with DEQ and other concerned citizens on water well awareness they will meet on November 13th at the regional Health department for official training. Students entered the Water is Life contest and Anna Bellow won 2nd place in the region and her art will be entered in the state competition.

Team two: Our Goal is to reduce the amount of trah in the local landfill by notifiying the community about the six Green Truck recycle truck locations.

Our second Goal is to keep phone books out of the the land fill which weigh around 2 pounds each we are also recycling aluminum.

We will be participating in Poor Pony Fest November 1-2 taking plastic grocery bags and reusing them by creating fabric all are invited to attend at Central School in the Historic distric.

The second goal is to get all the teachers on board with recycling , the team has become eco detectives and notifys the teachers if the fall short or if they are doing a good Job. They also monitor all the recycled paper and plastics that are being recycled at our school.

We are planning an Energy Fair on March 19th with national and Local Energy companies to discuss Conservation , and Global impact.

St. Margaret Science Club was published in a National News Letter for Energy Awareness

St Margaret Science Club and Thomas Breaux an Eagle Scout will present a proposition on Schools going Solar for the Diocese of Lake Charles in hopes of the St Margaret School becoming the first Solar School in the Parish.

The 8th grade Students in the Science Club read Magic School Bus from DEQ on Deisel air pollution to younger elementary students. The students also tested air samples from indoor and outdoor sources around the parish concluding that indoor air was worse than outdoor air as well as identifying what is pollution and how to come up with workable solutions to help fix the problem in the Lake area. Then, they created cartoons and submitted them to the American Press, the Mayor, and the Governors office.The Club President and Vice Presedent atteneded a talk on Louisiana's Environment.

Students in the 8th grade Science Club wrote and executed a skit at the PTC meeting to encourage the community to clean the air one bulb at a time. Student participants encouraged the audience to change a light and save the world. The save-the-world pledge was distributed to the audience. Students promoted the pledge by saying they could get 100 pledges and have worked towards that goal. The school webmasters posted the pledge on the school website home page.
